Engaged employees are three times more productive than average, but only ~30% are engaged, and ~20% are actively disengaged. Moreover, engaged employees provide 70% of the improvement ideas and improve the probability of organizational success by seven-fold. Yet many, if not most, improvement programs rely on the more advanced tools for improvement like RCM, RCA, and Six Sigma, that only involve some three to five percent of the employees. It provides a common sense approach to defect elimination, as the title states. Too often, companies want to develop complex engineering solutions to relatively simple problems. If you want to know about the problems with the work, ask the workers. They will tell you where the defects (problems) are, and more importantly, they can then be involved in creating the solution, thus creating engagement and ownership.
